Hong Kong Alley Typology

I adopt a typological approach using a vertical composition to systematically record the long-overlooked Hong Kong urban "slits"—its back alleys.
The photographs are divided into two series: Day (Horizontal and Zenithal) and Night. During the day, black and white photography emphasizes the alleys' characteristic elements, namely the geometrical shapes and the structures of the buildings, and the outlines of objects. At night, color images reinforce the sense of alienation and muted mood induced by street lamps, billboards, neon signs, and people arriving and leaving. Debris, pipes, scaffolding, and heat and smoke vented from air conditioners and extractor fans collectively reveal the functional equipment of the city.
