For some people, the impression of Hong Kong is that of a bustling, high-rise city. However, the border areas in Hong Kong still exude a rural atmosphere, contrasting with the highly developed commercial zones across the river in Shenzhen. In winter, migratory birds stop at Mai Po and Deep Bay wetlands and occasionally perch on cables, roofs, and treetops. Although fishponds, plantations, sheep farms, and pig farms still support Hong Kong's fisheries and agriculture, the number of practitioners in these fields has drastically decreased in recent years.
In response to the Hong Kong government's development of the Northern Metropolis, many borderlands in Kwu Tung and Lok Ma Chau have been or are planned to be used to construct new towns and technology parks. The common rural structures such as tin houses, container houses, wooden houses, and squatters will be replaced by modern high-rise buildings.
